About The Artist
I'm Maeve Doherty, an artist from New York and a recent graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, where I studied English Literature and Studio Art.
I've always been drawn to the things people tend to overlook. Much of my work comes from my own life: old family photographs, my siblings, exciting angles of the windows, or even the contents of a junk drawer. I am drawn to the idea that something entirely ordinary can become interesting simply by creating something out of it.
I'm especially interested in fabric and texture. I love painting the folds of a dress, the wrinkles in an unmade bed, or the way light catches different surfaces. There's something satisfying about trying to recreate the weight and movement of fabric with paint. I often find myself more interested in these little details than in the subject as a whole.
I work primarily in oil and watercolor, and my paintings tend to have a sense of humor to them. I don't take myself too seriously, although I care a great deal about what I make. I like experimenting with color, perspective, and composition, and finding ways to make familiar subjects feel a little unexpected!
I mainly take commissions, particularly portraits and paintings of homes and places that mean something to people. I enjoy hearing the stories behind what I'm asked to paint and making something that feels personal to the person receiving it. Enjoy!
